The Manitoba government is investing $3.8 million toward reconstruction and safety enhancements of Main Street South in Dauphin, a project that will greatly enhance economic development opportunities by improving vehicle access to businesses along the commercial corridor, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie announced today.

“After years of being squeezed by the previous government’s municipal funding freeze, we’re investing in the infrastructure that creates jobs and helps communities thrive,” said Bushie. “Economic growth is happening in Dauphin and the surrounding area, and improvements to Dauphin’s Main Street are long overdue. By dividing the highway and adding sidewalks and a crossing for pedestrians, we’re improving safety and helping to facilitate the continued economic growth we’re seeing in Dauphin.”

The project involves improvements in two key areas: road widening and dividing the highway as well as expanded drainage pools and piping to reduce seasonal flooding. Initial work on the project began in October 2023 and is scheduled to be completed this October, the minister noted.

Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 5A is the main access into Dauphin from the south and has seen expanded commercial development along the route, which has brought with it increased traffic volumes and higher collision rates. The 1.7-kilometre project covers a section of PTH 5A from Whitmore Avenue south to Triangle Road, and includes surface reconstruction with the creation of a divided highway and connecting all local accesses to service roads, the minister noted.

“I am proud of the partnership between the Province of Manitoba and the City of Dauphin to enhance safety and stimulate economic growth along Main Street South,” said Mayor David Bosiak, City of Dauphin. “This project not only addresses immediate infrastructure needs but also lays the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous future for our community. With improvements to road infrastructure and storm drainage, we are creating a safer and more accessible environment for residents and visitors alike. This investment aligns with our city planning goals and underscores our commitment to fostering sustainable development and enhancing quality of life for all.”

This project also addresses needs outlined in multiple city planning documents, such as the city’s active transportation plan, which noted the need for improved pedestrian access and facilities along this corridor. To help address these needs, this new project includes the construction of sidewalks and a signalized intersection at the Dauphin Marketplace Mall.
