Both Manitoba teams were winners on day one of the Telus Cup West Regional Hockey Championship at Hockey for All Centre in Winnipeg. Brady Turko and Owen Wallace each had a goal and an assist as the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Saskatoon Blazers 4-1. Carter Kingerski had two goals and an assist as the host Winnipeg Wild shaded the Thunder Bay Kings 5-4. The Wheat Kings and Wild meet tonight at 8 p.m. while the Blazers face the Kings at 5 p.m.


The Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Ice face the Regina Rebels tonight (7:30 p.m.) at Hockey for All Centre in game one of the best-of-three Esso Cup West Regional Hockey Championship. 


Round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs begin tonight in Winkler and La Broquerie. The Flyers take on the Virden Oil Capitals at the Centennial Arena. Virden won three of the four games between the two teams during the regular season schedule. The defending champion Steinbach Pistons meet the OCN Blizzard at the HyLife Centre.


The Brandon Wheat Kings 2023-24 Western Hockey League season is over. The Moose Jaw Warriors scored four first period goals en route to a 6-2 victory over Brandon at Westoba Place. Dominion City's Denton Mateychuk had a goal and an assist for the Warriors who swept the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal in four straight. Rylen Roersma and Carter Klippenstein did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings. 


The Winnipeg Jets clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs Thursday night. Gabriel Vilardi scored three times as Winnipeg defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2 at Canada Life Centre. Nikolaj Ehlers and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Jets who have won back-to-back games after losing six straight. Josh Morrissey chipped in with a pair of assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves. The Flames were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. 


Ella Shelton had a goal and two assists as Canada won its preliminary round opener 4-1 over Finland at the 2024 World Women's Hockey Championship in Utica, New York. Julia Gosling, Brianne Jenner and Emma Maltais also scored for Canada. Deloraine's Ashton Bell drew an assist on Shelton's third period power play goal. Ann-Renée Desbiens turned aside 32 of the 33 shots she faced. Canada's next game is today (2 p.m.) against Switzerland. 


Brad Gushue will play his final two round robin games today against Shinya Abe of Japan and Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland at the World Men's Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Gushue, vice-skip Mark Nichols, second E.J. Harnden and lead Geoff Walker defeated Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway 7-4 and lost 6-5 to Niklas Edin of Sweden. Edin leads the standings at 10-0; defending champion Bruce Mouat of Scotland is 9-2 while Gushue is 8-2. The top two teams earn a bye to the semifinals.
