There are 10 Zone 9 varsity volleyball teams competing in Regional Playdowns today. The Melita Marauders and Elkhorn Bulldogs are at the A boys in Hamiota. The Deloraine Colts, Wawanesa Warriors and Melita are at the A girls in Elkhorn. The Boissevain Broncos and Souris Sabres are at the AA girls in Souris. Boissevain and the Killarney Raiders are at the AA boys in Boissevain. The Virden Bears are at the AAA girls regional at Neepawa. The winners will advance to the Provincial Elite 8.


Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League – Josh Fluker had a goal and three assists as Southwest defeated the Interlake Lighning 5-2 Friday night in Teulon. Ty Plaisier, Jayce Thompson, Nate Robson and Darren Hunt also scored for the Cougars. Fluker, Robson and Hunt’s goals were scored on the power play. Southwest netminder Owen LaRocque made 18 saves.


Callie Rice scored twice as the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League’s Westman Wildcats downed the Central Plains Capitals 6-1 in Portage. Karlyn Gudz, Kelsey Huibers, Hayley Kolosky and Erica Stutsky also scored for the Wildcats who received a 17-save performance from Grace Glover.


The Virden Oil Capitals lost 2-1 in overtime to the OCN Blizzard at Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre. Dylan Halliday had the lone goal for the Oil Capitals who are idle until next week when they face the Selkirk Steelers and Winkler Flyers at the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase at Stride Place in Portage.


The Boissevain Border Kings, Deloraine Royals Wawanesa Jets, Cartwright Clippers and Minnedosa Bombers were winners in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Tyler Dittmer scored twice and Zeanan Zimmer had a goal and three assists as the Border Kings beat the Melita Bisons 7-3. Ty Moffatt had two goals and an assist as the Royals doubled up on the Souris Elks 4-2. Brock Sutherland scored three times in Wawanesa’s 8-7 victory over MacGregor 8-7. The Jets and Wild combined for 11 third period goals. Jory Mullin and Wyatt Cobb had two assists each as the Clippers shaded the Pilot Mound Pilots 3-2 and Ryan Heino scored with 48 seconds left in the third period to lift the Bombers past the Gladstone Lakers 4-3.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice were both winners in the Western Hockey League. Ridley Greig had a goal and an assist as Brandon defeated Moose Jaw 4-2 at Westoba Place. Matthew Savoie scored a power play goal with 1:46 left in the third period to lift Winnipeg past the Broncos 4-3 in Swift Current. The Ice have won 18 of their first 19 games this season.


The Winnipeg Jets wrapped up their two-game road trip Friday night in Vancouver. Thatcher Demko made 37 saves and backstopped the Canucks to a 3-2 victory over Winnipeg. Nikolaj Ehlers and Pierre-Luc Dubois did the goal scoring for the Jets.
