The Virden Oil Capitals scored two goals in each period and beat the Selkirk Steelers 6-4 in their first of two games at the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase in Portage. Carson Buydens, Tyler Thoendel, Dylan Halliday, Braden Fischer, Evan Groening and Trevor Hunt did the goal scoring for the Oil Capitals who face the Winkler Flyers Wednesday afternoon.


Three Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams remain in the Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues Weekly Top 20 Rankings. The Dauphin Kings (16-4) have jumped from 14th to eighth place while the Winnipeg Blues (15-4-0-1) have moved up four spots from 17 to 13. The Steinbach Pistons (15-4-1) have dropped from sixth place all the way to 15th. The Alberta Junior Hockey League's Brooks Bandits (23-1-1) hold down the number one slot for the fourth straight week.


Dominic Toninato scored Winnipeg's lone goal in a  3-1 loss to Pittsburgh at Canada Life Centre. Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry made 30 saves. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 33 shots for the Jets who have lost three in a row and will begin a three-game road trip Wednesday in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.


Jordon McDonald, Reece Hamm, Elias Huminicki and Alexandre Fontaine of Deer Lodge play their opening round robin game today against Scott Mitchell of Ontario at the National Qualifier bonspiel in Saskatoon which will determine the Canadian representatives at the 2022 World Junior Championships March 5-12 in Sweden. Meghan Walter, Lane Prokopowich, Katie McKenzie and Mackenzie Elias of East St. Paul won their opener on Monday 11-2 over Mackenzie Mitchell of Newfoundland & Labrador.
