This weekend is the one time of the year you might see a bed rolling down the highway. The University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Science student council is holding its 34th annual Aggie Bedpush this weekend, starting today with students pushing the custom-made bed-on-wheels through Oakville, Portage la Prairie, Gladstone, and Neepawa.

This year the Bedpush is raising funds for CancerCare Manitoba, in support of Aggie alumnus, Darcy Miller, owner of Miller Agritec in Oakville, who has a 90-acre soybean growing project. Rachael Verwey, a third-year animal sciences student and Faculty of Agriculture Students' Organization charity rep, says he plans to donate the money he makes off the soybean crop to CancerCare.

"He was recently diagnosed with cancer, and he wanted to a way to give back to CancerCare Manitoba for being so overwhelming great to him and his family over the past couple years," says Verwey. "Since he's an Aggie, and that relates directly back to us, we thought we would love to stand behind Darcy and his cause."

They'll be collecting donations along the route and through each town they stop in. Saturday's itinerary includes visits to Minnedosa, Carberry, Glenboro, and Carman. But Verwey says she's most excited for Friday's stop in Portage.

"We'll have a couple of the equipment dealerships to come out and they're going to be pilot vehicles for us," she says, "One of the dealerships is bringing a combine, is what the salesman told me, and the other dealerships is bringing one of their big four-wheel drive tractors, so it should be cool pushing down Saskatchewan Avenue."

And while they're pushing the same burgundy bed frame as 34 years ago, Verwey says it's seen some modifications.

"There are no longer any bungee straps holding it together," she laughs, "We did some modifications with the steering, so it should be super fast now."

More information, including how to donate, is on the U of M Aggie website.
