As Canada's agriculture sector continues to battle labour shortages, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is focusing on the area of bringing in workers from other countries.

CFA president Ron Bonnett says they have been looking at current immigration policy and regulations around temporary foreign workers.

He says the success of the seasonal agriculture workers program was a topic of discussion at the CFA annual general meeting last week.

"We had a panel with the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture, and he actually mentioned the value of that program to his country and creating jobs for Mexicans in the summer, and then when they come back they've actually got a skillset they can apply in Mexico as well. So I think what we want to look at is making sure we identify all of the key areas within agriculture that can use that seasonal workers program and ensure the integrity of the program stays in tact," Bonnett says.

Agriculture More Than Ever estimates 38 per cent of jobs in the agriculture sector will go unfilled from 2011-2020.
