With a new Liberal majority, Ron Bonnett of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) says Canada will have stability in government going forward.

Leading up to Monday's election, Bonnett said it was critical for agriculture to become a part of election talk. Now that the election and campaigning is over, he says agriculture was overshadowed by other issues during the campaign period.

"I think what we have to look at now is that we do have a new government with a large percentage of the members coming from urban communities," Bonnett says, "I think this would be the time for farmers to really start talking to some of the elected officials and bring them up to speed on what agriculture is all about."

He says there are a number of issues needing to be further discussed the ag sector, particularly labour shortages, risk management, and trade.

"The first step for us as an organization is to meet with the newly elected government officials and put forward some of our concerns and also volunteer to help really work with them to make sure that we get ag policy that works for everybody."
