The Canadian Pork Council (CPC) is hoping the federal government will rethink its stance on washing and disinfecting regulations for swine transport vehicles.

Chair Rick Bergmann says after May 2nd, a pilot program will end which is now allowing trucks returning to Canada to be sealed at the border and washed in Canada.

Under the new system, trucks will be forced to wash in the US before entering Canada.

Bergmann notes many producers are unhappy with the change.

"They say if that occurs, then they will need to have those trailers then rewashed into Canada because the studies that have been developed in the past proves that we're very vulnerable if we're going to be 100 per cent dependent on US wash bays."

Bergmann says the PED situation in the US has turned endemic, and he worries that washing Canadian trucks in the states will only create more harm than good.
