When people talk about farming, at some point the conversation always leans towards the age of farmers and farm size.

According to the last census done by Statistics Canada in 2011, 48.3% of operators were aged 55 or over, compared with 40.7% in 2006.

Agricultural Consultant and Farmer Kevin Hursh says when it comes to stats on farm, age it can be deceiving.

"I don't think the young people always have their name on the land title or their name on the farming corporation and the census data doesn't capture them as the principal farm operator," he said. "I have no fear that young people don't want to be involved in agriculture. I see all sorts of people that are more involved, and more interested than I've ever seen before."

The next official Canadian census will be in 2016.
