Many producers are now shifting their focus from harvest to fall fertilizer applications.

Angela Brackenreed is an agronomy specialist for Manitoba with the Canola Council of Canada.

She has a few tips for producers.

"Essentially we can achieve the same results as a spring nitrogen application if we ensure that the soil temperature is less than 10 degrees and continuing to cool off," she said.

Brackenreed notes its important to get good soil closure of the band, adding two inch depth should be plenty.

Those using anhydrous ammonia, might want to consider going a bit deeper if there is a lot gassing off.

Brackenreed notes with current prices, this might be a good time to top up on phosphorus, adding banding it with urea can make it more readily available next spring.

She reminds producers to save some starter phosphate for seeding next spring.
