As seeding continues, some producers already have canola crops in the ground while the forecast indicates we could see some frost at the end of the week.

While this may be a concern for canola that has already emerged, meteorologist Drew Lerner of World Weather Inc. doesn't think a frost event this year will be as devastating as it was last year. Lerner says cold temperatures in the coming days aren't likely to drop as much as they did last year.

"Last year of course temperatures were much colder and the crop could not survive in that environment," he explains, "but with the temperatures more likely to be, you know, zero or minus one, minus two, and probably for shorter periods of time during the night, I think there's a higher potential the crop will come out of it okay."

Lerner thinks the effects of the forecasted frost will depend on local conditions, noting some few areas may need to be replanted.
