With winter on the way, hay prices have stayed fairly consistent over the fall months.

John McGregor of Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association says alfalfa is trading in the six to 10 cent per pound range, with alfalfa grass around four to six cents, and beef hay closer to three to four and a half cents per pound.

McGregor says the hay situation out west has put pressure on Manitoba hay prices, although it could be better for our supply.

"As we got into July and August, with the timely rain, the Saskatchewan and Alberta situation improved," he says, "so, again, hay that was possibly expected to move out west, we may not see quite as much, so there should be adequate supplies for producers to get hay."

The hay situation varies through the province, but McGregor says there seems to be good supply in Wisconsin for producers who may be short and needing to buy.
