Farmers are being reminded about the rules and regulations surrounding seed sales.

Each year a number of farmers save seed to reuse the following spring on their farm which is fine, the issue comes in if they try and sell some of that seed; as certain seed varieties are trademarked under the plant breeders rights act.

Lorne Hadley is the executive director of the Canadian Plant Technology Agency.

He notes information on protected varieties can be found on the PBR section of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website.

Hadley says farmers should also be aware of the rules surrounding any technology agreements they may have signed, adding it’s a serious infringement if producers are found to be illegally selling seed.
