A Manitoban is among those who have become sick with salmonella linked to live chicks from an Alberta hatchery.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says there are now 41 cases of human illness under investigation including 22 in Alberta, 14 in British Columbia, 4 in Saskatchewan and 1 in Manitoba.

Seven people have been hospitalized and all individuals have recovered or are recovering.

The individuals became sick between April 5 and May 23, 2015 and all have reported contact with live baby poultry.

Many individuals reported purchasing live poultry by mail-order or from feed supply storefronts for backyard flocks to produce eggs or meat.

The hatchery involved has distributed information letters to affected customers who have placed orders for live baby poultry that were hatched between March 1 and May 5, 2015.

The public health agency says the best way to avoid becoming sick from salmonella is to wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after touching live poultry.
