The general manager of Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) says Friday's repeal of Country of Origin Labeling was a red-letter day for the Canadian cattle industry.

Melinda German says for many years, Canadian producers and government fought hard to get here, and this repeal was critical for the industry's capacity and growth. In the short term, she doesn't think this will affect cattle prices, but it will have an effect in the long term.

"We should see increased stability as more markets open up to us," she says. "We are an export country, and Manitoba relies very heavily on exports to the U.S. so that's going to be significant to us... Where we are in North America, and our location to other plants in Canada, we actually see a cost advantage in terms of some of the plant locations just across the line."

In a statement, MBP also thanked the past and present federal governments in their work and support to have American labeling laws repealed.
