Transparency is an issue for pork producers on both sides of the border.

That from Pat McGonegle, CEO of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

He was part of a US contingent that attended Manitoba Pork's annual meeting earlier this month.

McGonegle said foreign animal disease is also a big concern.

"Both Canada and the US have extensive export marketing efforts," he commented. "In the US we're roughly about 25 per cent of our production. I think Canada is a little bit more than that. So anytime you have that kind of market situation, you have to be prepared in the event that you've got foreign animal disease and you'd have to shut off exports."

McGonegle believes that President Donald Trump will have a positive impact on the pork industry in the US, adding in the long-term, he expects Trump to be a strong advocate for trade.
