The University of Manitoba Glenlea Research Station, south of Winnipeg, has been conducting a crop rotation study for 24 years.

The study looks at both conventional and organic crops.

The National Centre For Livestock and the Environment hosted a field tour on Wednesday to showcase the project to the public.

Martin Entz, professor of cropping systems at the U of M, says he was pleased with the turnout.

“Some of them are organic farmers, I would say most of them are not. They're conventional farmers looking to adjust their farming systems to make them a little more ecological. Farmers are very aware of herbicide resistance problems and even fungicide resistance. I think these types of events where farmers look at extreme systems are really good.

Topics covered at the event included composting, alternative weed and soil management practices, and lessons learned from the 24-year-old Glenlea crop rotation study.
