The Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association held its second annual general meeting earlier this month in Winnipeg.

Chair Fred Greig says up until now, they've been working toward setting up the structure of the organization, but this is the first fiscal year they've been able to approve research funding. Once they receive final approval from funding partners, Greig says they are budgeting to spend 70 per cent of their funds on research.

"We are pretty excited about some excess moisture projects that are going to get approved," he says, "nobody's done a lot of that research in the past, and it's been a huge problem for Manitoba producers over the last number of years."

Greig says they're also looking into research on nitrogen rates and fusarium head blight.
