Two 4-H members took home awards at the 2022 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), hosted virtually by the University of New Brunswick Fredericton Campus from May 16 to 20, 2022.

Mark Norregaard from Balzac, AB was awarded the Silver Medal – Excellence Award for his project “A Comparison of Natural Corrosion Inhibitors on Metals.” The Excellence Awards recognize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) excellence.

Mac Dykeman from Langley, BC walked away with two awards. The Canadian Acoustical Association Award and the Challenge Award – Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food for her project “A Simple, Scalable Method for Reducing Stress in Chicks During the First Seven Days Post Hatch.”

The Canadian Acoustical Association Award is given to an outstanding senior project related to acoustics, the science of sound, while the Challenge Award – Agriculture, Fisheries and Food recognizes outstanding projects that help ensure food security, sustainability, or competitiveness in agriculture, fisheries, or food production. The Challenge Award targets issues that are important to Canada’s youth, the future of our country, and the world.

“The creativity and passion for science from our 4-H members never ceases to amaze me,” said Shannon Benner, 4-H Canada CEO. “Huge congratulations to Mac, Mark, and Alexandra for their innovative projects and impressive results. We know their hard work has inspired the 4-H community across the country, and we look forward to seeing even more projects and participation next year.”

In addition to awards won by 4-H Canada members, Thông Quách of Saskatoon, SK was winner of the 4-H Canada Sustainable Agriculture Award for their project, “Saved from the Lepidopterans.” The award, which is sponsored by 4-H Canada, is given to an outstanding junior project related to sustainable agriculture or farming.
