After being rained out in 2011 the Boissevain-Morton-Whitewater growing project was able to get a crop off this year.
Farmers and other supporters gathered at the field on the Del Fraser farm west of Fairfax on September 14.
Boissevain area farmer Ben Marten's chairs the local gorwing committee. "The crop came off great, we had 300 bushels of canola and it averaged 42 bushels per acre. That should raise about $150,000 dollars for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and its work."
Supporters showed up just before noon and enjoyed a lunch before the trucks and 17 combines took to the field. "This is the first year we've had more trucks than we needed" said Martens.
The project started in the Boissevain area 15 years ago and has grown to include the RM of Whitewater. As for 2013 Martens says they'll likely plant wheat. " The committee tries to choose a crop that produces good results while allowing the biggest number of producers to get involved."
