St. Matthews Anglican parish is starting a community gardening area this summer.

Their goal is to utilize a green space between the church and the parish hall on Stephen Street. “We noticed the increase in the price of groceries and there's a limited amount of space for many people, so we thought we’d try and project with raised garden beds where we’d rent out some space to try and help fill that need” said parish member Melanie Beard.

Beard says they’ve been accepting donations to build the garden beds and she says they already have people onboard to rent the raised garden beds for 2023.

The cost to rent one of the garden beds is $20.

“People needs to provide their own gardening tools, but the church will provide water. There’s a garden host they can use. There’s an expectation to keep your garden bed neat and weeded. We plan to keep the grass mowed.”

St. Matthews hopes to have at least six beds in use this year with plans to add more if needed in years to come.

“There’s room for growth and we hope this project goes over really well,” said Melanie Beard.
