Grade 2 teacher at Kirkcaldy Heights School, Kristen Loane, submitted her classroom's entry into CJRB's I Love to Read in the Classroom Contest!
And we'd like to say Congratulations to Ms. Loane and her students! They have won a free book for each of their students as well as their classroom library.
Ms. Loane shares some thoughts on how she encourages her students to read:
"In the beginning of the year, I like to create a “Stamina” reading chart. Each day of reading, we try to beat our last time of uninterrupted reading. We colour in 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and so on until we reach out goal of 20 minutes," she explains. "We also have a really cozy reading nook with pillows and chairs to make it more comfortable."
In addition, here are some ways Ms. Loane makes reading exciting for her students:
- We do buddy reading so we can read with another student.
- We write our own books and read them to each other.
- We do readers theatre which they love!
- Read using computers.
- Home reading.
- Reading in the Library.
- Shared reading with teachers.
- Exciting and new books.
Congratulations again to Kristen Loane and her Grade 2 class, and all the best to the students and staff at Kirkcaldy Heights School, Brandon!
