Canola meal shipments from Bunge in Altona no longer face restrictions upon entering the United States.

After an extensive testing process, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has removed the Altona plant from its Import Alert List.

The FDA placed the Altona facility under the restrictions, which allowed inspectors to detain shipments without physically examining them, last September after shipments tested positive for salmonella.

The restrictions forced the company to rearrange sales and find new markets for canola meal coming from the Altona plant.

A company spokesperson says they welcome the news, after working closely with the FDA. It's expected shipments to the U.S. will return to previously-seen levels within the next few months.

The Import Alert List still includes Viterra's canola crushing plant at Ste. Agathe.
