Brandon University staff and students showed their appreciation for the new Healthy Living Centre on Friday along with officials from all three levels of government during a celebration of the partnership that made this project possible.

The original Brandon University fitness facility was expanded by nearly 50,000 square feet. It now includes, among other features, three gymnasiums, an indoor walking/jogging track and new fitness class facilities.
Furthermore, the Centre was designed to meet the Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design requirements which would make it one of the most energy efficient facilities in Brandon.
The new building will promote healthy living among Brandon University students and area residents. It revolutionizes the University's programming potential, supports student recruitment and retention, and offers healthy living options to residents of all ages.
The project's total cost was $20.6 million and funding was split between the University, federal and provincial governments and the City of Brandon.

Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire said it was money well spent.
“Our Government is proud to promote healthy living and community involvement through this state of the art centre for students, staff and residents. Investments in Canada’s public infrastructure create jobs, economic growth and improve families’ quality of life across the country.”

Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst noted the healthy living cntre is a great addition to Brandon.
“Brandon is thrilled to welcome this multi-faceted addition to the Brandon University campus which will enrich the lives of Brandon and area residents for years to come. Our vibrant community will benefit physically, mentally, and economically by the high-calibre amenities provided by this facility.”

BU President Dr. Deborah Poff says the new facility is an important part of the University moving forward.
“This is an historic day for Brandon University. We celebrate the commitment of our federal, provincial and municipal governments in their collective support in bringing the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre from a long-term dream at BU into a 21st century state-of-the-art facility. With their leading support, and the commitment of alumni, students, faculty and staff and philanthropic foundations as well as individuals, this facility will serve our University, the City of Brandon, and the residents of southwestern Manitoba for many years to come.”
