The civic centre in Killarney is set to undergo some improvements.

Council plans to spend about $2 million on the upgrades that include work on both the interior and exterior of the building located along the community’s main street.

Killarney-Turtle Mountain Mayor Merv Tweed says the work is expected to take six months to complete. “We’ve approved the budget and hired the contractor. He had a few other jobs to complete but we’re hoping mid August is start date for the project.”

The renovations are aimed at improving accessibility and safety within the building which was constructed in the late 1960’s.

“Because of the new fire hall we’re going to renovate the old fire hall at the town office and turn it into more office space including the municipal offices. The upgrade will improve what’s there and make it safer and make it ore in line with regulations and codes. I think it will be a real benefit to the community.”

Tweed says the changes are extravagant but a move to improve what the municipal has in that building.

“The new town offices will be located in the fire hall and the basement area in the main office will become the town chambers.”

Merv Tweed says councils have been putting money aside for a number of years but the project will still have a $1.5 million finance package.

“These changes have to be done and the exterior of the building will also be altered slightly. It will look much the same but things like the steps are eroding and things like that have to fixed up and finished properly.”
