The swimming pool in Deloraine is showing wear and tear after being used by the community for just over 40 years.

Over the next number of weeks, the pool repair or rebuild strategy is being assessed to determine what is the best course to take for council.

Deloraine-Winchester Reeve, Gord Weidenhamer, says decisions will need to be made – and fundraising will need to take place.

“By calculations it was a centennial project built back in 1980 for our community. So, it definitely is aged.  We had an engineer take a look at the pool recently and they’re coming back with a report to see what angle to go with and what the costs will be.  This is possibly something our community fundraising will be looking into and raise some good dollars for it to keep it off the tax base as much as possible if we can, and make the right decisions moving forward so it’s there for years to come.”

Weidenhamer shares some of the structural damage that has occurred over the past few years.  “We’ve had some problems with the north wall collapsing, and a bit of the draining issues.  I think back in wet years the pool actually tried lifting at one point.”

“There’s definitely some dollars that are needing to be spent there if we’re looking at the long-run,” he adds.

“The rest of it is normal infrastructure,” he says. “We’ve kept up pretty good with the boilers and things like that.  But when it comes to the pool itself some people are talking about the location could be more accessible for the community.”

“So, looking forward there are a few decisions to make.”
