For several years deer have been roaming the streets and back lanes of Killarney and the problem doesn’t seem to be letting up.

Residents and motorists have been dealing with the deer in town and there’s nothing they can do to cull the population. “They’re everywhere,” said Killarney Turtle Mountain Mayor Janice Smith.

“There isn’t anything we can do. We’ve had talks with Manitoba Conservation because when the deer have their babies, they can get aggressive but that’s their natural instinct to do when they have babies. One thing people have been told to do is remove bird feeders. Right now it’s easy pickings for the deer to eat and they are safe in town.”

Smith says it’s been a problem for a number of years and it doesn’t show any sign of letting up.

“When I spoke with natural resources the officer said this past winter was very hard on the deer population and there was quite a bit of kill off. The transition from the winter to spring was hard on the deer,” said Smith.
