Crushing metal was a great sound Sunday at the Boissevain Fair Grounds, during Darbie's Annual Demolition Derby. Jason Smith tells us his family enjoys hosting the fundraiser, and this year they tried something new.

He adds they also included a demo car raffle with the chance to drive a car in the derby. The fundraising motor sports event has been held every summer since 2007, and Smith says they will continue to coordinate the derby and donate their profits as long as they can. He notes it's never too much trouble finding good help for the fundraiser.

The funds that normally go to families with unexpected burdens or to a volunteer organization are usually in the 5 to 10 thousand dollar range.

Approximately 30 vehicles took part in the 2011 edition of Darbie's Demo Derby and $750 went to the first place driver. There were also cash payouts for heats, consolations, mechanic and powderpuff heats.

More information on the history of Darbie's Demo Derby as supplied by www.boissevain.ca.

Darbie’s Demo Derby committee was formed in 2007 when the Smith family & friends took over management of the Boissevain Demolition Derby. The committee decided that each year all profits from the derby would go to a family who is faced with unexpected burdens or to a volunteer organization who work towards making our community a better place to live.

The Smith name is well identified in the demolition derby and stock car race circuit as members have been involved in these events since the 1970’s. Darbie’s Demo Derby has been named in honour of Darlene and Robbie Smith. Ten years ago, Robbie was injured in a stock car race and left a quadraplegic. His wife Darlene suffers from severe Multiple Sclerosis, relying mostly on a motorized scooter to get around. Funds from the 2007 Darbie’s Demolition Derby were put into a trust for this extraordinary couple, who still live in their home in Ninga.

Profits from the 2010 Demo Derby went towards Karin Bos of Minto, who was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in 1996. In January 2010, it was discovered the tumor was now cancerous and began chemotherapy, Karin died in September 2010, leaving to morn her nine year old twin boys.
