Russell MLA Len Derkach

After a quarter century of representing the Russell area MLA Len Derkach says he won't seek re-election this fall.

Derkach was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1986. Just last week the Tory MLA had announced he was going to seek the nomination for the newly formed constituency of Riding Mountain. He was going to go head to head with Minnedosa MLA Leanne Rowat whose constituency was also being eliminated because of boundary realignment.

Derkach has since had a change of heart.

Derkarch says he has enjoyed representing the area and plans to stay on the job until this fall's election. He was Manitoba's Minister of Education from 1988 to 1992 and Minister of Rural Development from 1992 to 1999. Derkach spent the past 12 years on the opposition side of the legislature.
