Scarecrow Days is coming to Souris this weekend with a host of garage sales to add to the list of things to do!

Echo Finlay is the Economic Development Officer for the municipality of Souris-Glenwood, and also this year’s Committee Chair for Scarecrow Days.

Finlay says they’re sticking to the guidelines of personal protection and social distancing as put out by the Province, but they are still determined to have fun with their community and all who come to visit during this festive weekend.

“Our Medical Officer of Health said its more about living with COVID and staying safe and so we wanted to get back to hosting this event,” explains Finlay.

“That being said,” she adds, “we’re anticipating about 50 garage sales and that will be this coming Saturday.  When people sign up [to hold a garage sale] they get a safety sheet that advises how to keep safe and how to keep your patrons safe.  It’s about personal protection and social distancing.  We’re definitely sticking to the guidelines.”

Finlay says Scarecrow Days is actually hosted by the Souris Chamber of Commerce, so she’s been wearing a few (scarecrow) hats ramping up for this weekend.

The Elks’ crabapple slingshot game will be making it’s return this year, promising to be a hit once again.   Finlay explains what happened last year:

The Souris Fire Department will be hosting a lunch bar-b-que at the fire hall on Saturday at noon and the public is invited to join them.  Local shops will also be having specials to get in on the festivities.

Scarecrows will be on display around the town of Souris and Finlay encourages everyone to participate in as many different themes and scenes as they can think of.  “Our theme this year is ‘Music Makes the World Go Round’.  “This week is the big push for people to put them together and we’re hoping for a really high participation.  We’re hoping to see, instead of Lady Gaga, Lady Straw-Straw.  My son said maybe the Share-Crow because of the music theme!”

“You need this for community spirit,” Finlay shares. “You need something happening in the community so this is a good way to go forward.”

www.sourismanitoba.com and the Souris Chamber of Commerce Facebook page will be posting pictures and more information as the week progresses.
