The Killarney Foundation has awarded more than $6.5 million to community project since starting in 1980 and the board is looking for applications for the group’s next round of funding.

The Killarney Foundation Inc. manages and administers endowment funds established by people from all walks of life.

The Mayor of Killarney Turtle Mountain always Chairs the board and right now that’s Janice Smith. “It’s the most wonderful feeling sitting on this board. Over the years we’ve handed out the most deserving grants to community projects. In particular we give a lot back to the hospital and the school.”

“We also hand out grants to a number of other groups who come to us with applications.”

The Killarney Foundation has more than $8.6 million in assets collecting interest. While the board is obligated to hand out some of the funds to predetermined projects members always have a certain amount of money to grant at their discretion.

“We have two intakes with one in the spring and one in the fall. Application info is on our website if you want to put an application together. Applicants are welcome to attend our meeting and give us any other information we might need in making our decision,” said Janice Smith.

Smith points out they do have some regular applicants and they do a lot for groups like the library and communities in bloom. “Like everything else prices are going up so some of the requests are getting to be quite large.”
