To improve public safety and bring proven community outreach support to downtown Brandon, a re-elected PC government will expand the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) program with a $2-million grant to get it established, PC Leader Heather Stefanson announced today - Media Release Sept 25, 2023

“We're fighting for safer streets with a model that works,” said Stefanson. “The DCSP has shown us that by engaging with and supporting vulnerable Manitobans, we can ensure the well-being of our communities and make our streets safer for everyone.”

The PCs began the DCSP in 2020 as a partnership between provincial and municipal governments, fire and police authorities, and business stakeholders to serve those who live, work, and learn in downtown Winnipeg. The DCSP currently serves downtown Winnipeg, reducing strain on police and 911 resources by providing a community-focused, non-emergency response system.

The DCSP model provides non-emergency response to individuals in need, with 24-7 community presence and availability. The model is centered on a proactive, culturally appropriate, and community-focused long-term solution to dealing with homelessness, crime, and addictions in a downtown core.

“In my time as Police Chief, I saw firsthand the need Brandon has for more non-emergency response services,” said Wayne Balcaen, PC Candidate for Brandon West. “The DCSP model worked in downtown Winnipeg, and I advocated to bring that model here to Brandon. I'm proud to be part of a PC Team fighting for safer streets across the Province.”

The provincial election will be held on October 3rd, 2023.
