The Keystone Centre in Brandon will be undergoing some upgrades over the next two years.

The Keystone Centre is a unique multi-functional facility that hosts a variety of local, provincial, national and international events that contribute to the social, recreational, cultural and agricultural fabric of the region. Located on 90 acres in Brandon, the centre offers 540,000 sq.-ft. of multi-use space and hosts hundreds of events annually. Its main seats 5,102.

Provincial support will help cover the cost of the $6 million project.

“Three phases of work will include upgrades to air conditioning, washroom renovations including improved accessibility, arena seating, sprinklers, and loading ramp improvements,” said Bruce Luebke Chair of the Keystone Centre’s board.

“This agreement reinforces the importance of the Keystone Centre as an event venue and an economic driver in our community. It also represents a significant contribution from both the City of Brandon and the Manitoba government to recognize the capital needs that the Keystone Centre currently has and will continue to have into the future.”

Luebke says an improved air conditioning and dehumidifying system will allow more events to be booked in the facility throughout the year. “Right now, it’s difficult to book events in the main arena from about May 1st to say September 1st and beyond. If you remember the fog bowl at the Wheat Kings home opener a few years ago. It’ll make it a better venue for all events.”

New seating will be going into the main arena in 2024. The existing seats are from the old Winnipeg Arena and are wearing out. "We still have to decide on things like whether or not the new seats will have cup holders and what colour to go with.

The air conditioning and dehumidifying work will be done this summer. Two of the four washrooms will be upgraded as well in 2023. Two more washrooms will be upgrade in 2024.

“Phase three will be in 2025 and that includes the fire alarm system, lower level sprinkler system and the loading ramp.
