The Killarney and Boissevain Schools have been recognized for their fund-raising efforts for being the top fundraisers in Manitoba for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Between the two schools, they raised $16,000 towards cancer research at their last Terry Fox Day Walk/Run, with Killarney School raising $8500 and Boissevain School raising $7500.

Turtle Mountain School Division Superintendent, Grant Wiesner, says he recently received an official letter from the Terry Fox Foundation congratulating both schools for their efforts. “Yes, they were the top 2 secondary schools (Grade 7-12) in the province and I’m very proud of them.”

“How exciting it is for our communities to rally and come together to raise that support for the Terry Fox Foundation,” he adds.

Wiesner attributes the success of this fundraising effort due to cancer being a part of their lives, either through family members or friends.

“It’s an important thing to do,” he shares. “Even when I was teaching, you would talk to students and every student had somebody they knew who had gone through and experienced cancer, and maybe had even gone through chemo. So, for our students and our staff it’s a personal thing.”

“So, it's nice to see them come together to support those they care about and to support this fundraiser for cancer research,” adds Wiesner.
