The federal government has more than doubled the fines for livestock transport violators.

Effective immediately, penalties of up to 10 thousand dollars can be imposed, more than doubling the previous maximum of 4 thousand dollars, on those who violate the Health of Animals Act.

The CFIA will retain the ability to increase fines by up to 50 percent of the maximum fine for repeat offenders. The agency will also be able to go back five years, rather than three, to view an offender's history.
