Statistics Canada reports cattle inventories for the month of January hit their lowest level since 1995.

As of January 1st, there were 12.5 million cattle on Canadian farms, down 3.4 percent from a year earlier. Cattle numbers in Manitoba dropped 4.9 percent over the same timeframe to 1.16 million.

Canadian hog producers reported 11.9 million hogs, up slightly - 0.6 percent - from last year. The increase in Manitoba was larger than the national average at 3.9 percent. The report says there were 2.62 million head in Manitoba to start the new year.
