One of the larger maintenance projects for Souris-Glenwood was categorizing and replacing culverts throughout the municipality.

“Our staff went around and graded all of our culverts; A, B and C,” explains Mayor Darryl Jackson.  “’A’ being in good shape, ‘B’ being fair and ‘C’ needing action sooner rather than later.  So, we’ve been working on those ‘C’ ones trying to bring those up to speed.”

Jackson notes they’ve kept up with keeping gravel on the rural roads fairly consistently but didn’t need to put on as much gravel this year, “Just on particular roads,” he adds.

“All in all, as far as our municipal projects went, they all turned out fairly well.”

Looking ahead to 2022, renewal of streets and paving and sidewalks are on the list of things to do in town. In the rural areas they’ll be continuing their culvert maintenance project.  “There’s definitely some drainage plans.  We need to clean out some ditches so that the water can run more efficiently.  Just a lot of clean up work with no major projects, barring some kind of crazy happening that we’re not aware of at this time.”

2022 is an election year and Mayor Jackson is ‘just sitting on the fence right now’.  Having put in just over 16 years as Mayor of Souris-Glenwood he’s not sure if he will be throwing his hat in the ring for another term.

“By the time of October of next year rolls around it will be 17 years for me as mayor,” he explains.  “I’ve had four 4-year-terms of my own and I also took the last year of the previous mayor when he unfortunately passed away.”

“So, 17 in total and it’s up in the air at this point.  It’ll depend on a few things I suppose, but I’m really riding the fence right now.
