Confectionary sunflowers are one of the few crops with North American supplies at adequate, even above-adequate, levels.

"There's a question about the supply from last year that's on the high side, so we got to get through that," says Jay Schuler, director with Seeds 2000. "But given the increase in prices of corn, soybeans, canola, the sunflower has to be well-priced to get acres. There has to be acres or else the prices going to go through the roof."

He expects a major drop in sunflower acres in North America this year.

"I think they'll be down probably 30 to 40 percent, and that might even be too much," he says.

Schuler was one of the speakers at the Manitoba Special Crops Symposium.
