Manitoba’s Hunter Education Program has been streamlined to be available online for both the learning portion and practice testing, but now the actual testing accessibility as well.

Carly Deacon is Managing Director for the Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF).  Deacon says this new format makes it much easier for those wanting to acquire their Hunter Education Certificate.

“We launched the Hunter Education Program back in 2009,” she says, “but recently we revised the program so that student graduates that take the online course can take it right to completion, versus taking the online course and then still having to go to an instructor for an exam and a practical.”

“So, this pretty much changed the online program to be 100% online only, where you start, and you finish with your Hunter Education Graduate Certificate.”

Deacon says this online testing program has been well received.  Typically, in the month of June, they would see a lower number of participants register in the Hunters Education Program as it is the slow season for hunters.  “The spring hunting season is over, and the fall hunting season isn’t close enough for people to see the program as a priority.”

Last month they saw some 600 students take the course, where in the same time frame one year ago, during the month of June 2019, they had only about 40 participants registered.

Deacon feels the tremendous uptake is due to the ease of online study and testing.

“To qualify for a hunting licence in Manitoba, any person who obtained their first hunting licence after 1969 must be a graduate of the provincial Manitoba Hunter Education Course or a similar hunter education course from another province or state.”
