A MacGregor-area farm took home the top award at McCain Foods annual grower awards banquet in Portage.

The event recognized the company's top producers, based on delivery of the 2009 crop to the Portage plant. Anton Wiebe Limited of MacGregor was named the champion potato grower. "It's quite an honour as there's quite good competition around," says Wiebe, who also claimed top prize in 2008. "We've give our credit to God. We do our best and he gives the increase."

"This last year was a little bit more interesting because of the rain. The harvest was challenging but we got it all off," he says.

Kehler Farms of Carman placed second. Jason Kehler says looking back, 2009 was a good year for potatoes. "We've had about 34 inches of rain this year so we've only harvested half a crop. So for the coming year, I do not see myself in the top ten," he says.

J.P. Wiebe and Sons Limited of MacGregor took home the third place designation.

McCain Foods will be hosting the grower banquet for producers who deliver to the Carberry Plant on November 3rd.
