MMF Southwest VP Leah LaPlante with MP Merv Tweed

The Metis in Manitoba are taking steps to preserve and revitalize their Michif language.

The federal government today provided 19,200-dollars to allow for bi-weekly language classes to be taught in 6 communities.

Leah Laplante is the MMF'S Vice President in the Southwest region. She says it's crucial the Metis language be passed onto the younger generation.

Brandon-Souris MP Merv Tweed says the government is providing 19,200 dollars for the 3 month language project.

The classes will be offered in Boissevain, Brandon, Minnedosa, Portage la Prairie, St. Ambrose and Binscarth.

This round of classes will start immediately and run until the end of March.

Laplante says if these classes are productive more funding could be secured to offered additional classes.
