Driving on Manitoba roadways can come with a handful of barriers in the winter, including blowing snow, drifting snow, whiteout conditions, and the list goes on.

There's not much you can do when it comes to mother nature, but there are suggestions from MPI to help you get to your destination safely.

MPI Spokesperson Brian Smiley stresses driving to conditions.

"It's very important when you're driving in the winter, you drive to the road and weather conditions. We would all agree that the speed limits are set for ideal conditions. So, you need to adjust your driving speeds accordingly. Give yourself a little extra time to get to your destination."

Smiley outlines some tips for being a safe winter driver.

"It's very important to leave some distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you. That'll give you a little extra stopping distance to prevent that rear-end collision. And visibility is very important, so you want to clear all the snow and ice off your windshield and side windows. You want to be able to see where you're going and the conditions around you."

He advocates for drivers to be extra cautious when getting on a highway or side street.

"When you're coming off a roadway onto a highway or a side street, you want to be very cautious looking around snowbanks heads out very slowly. Be very careful. The vehicles coming may not see you; you may not see them, so you want to be very, very cautious. When you're entering a roadway with snowbanks obstructing your vision."

Smiley notes that Manitobans need to stay off the roads when highways are closed.

"When the RCMP and other police agencies close roadways, they're doing that for a purpose for your safety, so please comply."

Things could be getting pretty slippery today with the mercury set to hit just above zero degrees today, along with a chance of flurries or rain showers combined with gusty northwesterly winds. Click here to view other driving tips provided by MPI.
