Joshua Malyk saw first-hand the benefits of the Sylvan Learning program 20 years ago as a student. He went on to become a tutor with the Sylvan team in Winnipeg and has now embraced the opportunity to bring his specialized training and experience to the Westman Region.

Upon moving to Brandon Joshua and his mother, Deborah, decided to partner together to offer the supplemental and enrichment education services of the Sylvan Learning program to grades K-12 students throughout the year from their newly opened learning center in the Brandon Shoppers Mall.

Sylvan Learning of Westman is a tutoring and supplemental learning facility that enables and supports children from pre-kindergarten (4 years old) till 18 (grade 12), and we primarily focus on reading, writing and math, says Deborah Malyk.  "We do other supports as well; we do homework supports and we will assist with other subjects. But that's our main focus."

Deborah worked for the provincial health department for nearly three decades before venturing into franchise ownership with her son. “Sylvan has been instrumental in supporting us as we translate our skillset into a successful business,” she says. “We’re a family helping other families, and it’s a dream come true to work alongside my son and see him pursue his passion in education and helping others.”

“Brandon is a growing city, and there is a big gap when it comes to supplemental education resources,” said Joshua. “Sylvan is a natural fit to meet the mounting demand for academic support outside of the classroom. Our goal is for our location to have a positive influence on the future of our community.”

"Our big focus is helping children to succeed," adds Deborah Malyk. "They are our future and when we have a child going forward who is confident and is excited about learning, the skies the limit for them. So, that's really what we want. We want to focus on helping the children.  Essentially we are a family helping families."

“We’re proud to open our doors in Brandon and provide a one-stop, all-subject resource to support students through every stage of their academic journey,” said John McAuliffe, CEO of Sylvan. “Whether a student needs help catching up or advancing their skillset, Sylvan is here to help, and there are no two better people to lead this center than Joshua and Deborah.”
