A new Metis Student Centre at Brandon University, that was several years in the making, officially opened Wednesday. Dr. Lorraine Mayer spearheded the new meeting and studying space with students Velvet Maud and Candice Carbonneau. Leah La Plante, Manitoba Metis Federation's Vice President of the southwest region, tells us where the idea for the centre came from.

She adds what students told them was the Aboriginal Student Centre was not relevant to them, and they didn't use it. The hope is that the new Metis Student Centre will encourage Metis students to come forward, enjoy the space, and meet with others.

The furniture and computers for the centre were provided by the MMF'S southwest region office, and was decorated by the Brandon Metis Women, with donations of cultural items from Dr. Mayer and Leah La Plante.
