A farmer from Ninga has spent the past 20 years raising money for the Cerebral Palsy Association’s Westman Chapter and he brought in more money on May 14.

Darren Unrau has a family member, his wife's cousin Tia Cherkoski, with Cerebral Palsy and he has made a point of taking part in the annual fund raising campaign for two decades. This past weekend he and some family members went for a bike ride.

“My daughters and I got on our bikes and we decided to ride from Boissevain to Ninga. We were on the highway and we had a really good day. The wind was helpful and kind of pushed us east. It turned out to be a really good day.”

Darren Unrau rode with his daughters Tessa and Aliya. He has generated thousands of dollars that go towards programs and services for people in Western Manitoba.

“Donation wise it was my best year ever and I raised close to $4,000. A really big thanks to the sponsors who were out there supporting us.”

Darren Unrau says the money helps people with Cerebral Palsy Westman Chapter and it’s dispersed to people who need help. “They apply through the association and it’s given out for different things they need like washroom lifts or any other needs.”

While Unrau appreciates biking outdoors he’d like to return to the old fund raising method which was a stationary bike-a-thon which brought all the fund raising participants together in one spot.

“I’m really hoping it does come back. It was so nice to have every one together at the Towne Centre in Brandon. Getting everyone together in a spot like that creates an environment that is fun and I hope it comes back. It didn’t work this year but I remain optimistic it will return with all cyclists getting together for the fund raising event” said Darren Unrau.
