Portage la Prairie RCMP investigate fatal collision

Media Release - November 24, 2021

On November 23, 2021, at approximately 10:25 am, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Road 68 North and Road 38 West in the RM of Portage la Prairie. When officers arrived on scene, a 74-year-old male from the RM of Portage la Prairie was deceased.

Initial investigation has determined that the 50-year-old male driver of a westbound dump truck, from Oak Lake, Manitoba, proceeded through the intersection on Road 68N, failing to stop at the stop sign and striking a southbound pickup truck driven by the deceased. The pickup truck rolled and landed on its roof in the southwest ditch.

The dump truck driver was arrested for Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death. He has since been released to appear in court.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision. Seatbelts were in use, and the intersection was snow packed and ice covered at the time of the collision.

A RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
