Six provincial high school varsity volleyball champions will be crowned this weekend as sixty teams begin play in the “A”, “AA” and “AAA” championships today.


Wawanesa girls and boys will represent Zone 9 at the Provincial “A” Championships. The Warriors are the number three seed for the boys championship in La Broquerie. Wawanesa is in a pool with Treherne, Ecole Pointe des Chenes in Ste. Anne, Inwood and the number one seed Rosenort Redhawks. Wawanesa girls are seeded eighth and are in a pool with Grandview, Treherne, Rosenort and Memorial 72 School in Oxford House. Nellie McLung Collegiate in Manitou is the number one seed for the “A” girls championship at Ecole Pointe des Chenes in Ste. Anne.


The Provincial “AA” girls championship is in Forrest. The host Elton Sabres are the top seed and are in a pool with Rivers, Boissevain, Goose Lake of Roblin and Ashern. The Rams are seeded third while the Broncos are fifth.

The “AA” boys championship is in MacGregor. Elton is seeded number one. The Sabres are in a pool with Morris, Westmount School in Swan Lake, Warren and Niverville. Souris is seeded number two and the Sabres are in a pool with Mennonite Collegiate Institute of Gretna, Goose Lake, MacGregor and Frontier Collegiate of Cranberry Portage.

Virden is hosting the Provincial “AAA” boys and girls championships. The host Golden Bears are seeded third on the girls draw and are in a pool with Dauphin, Westgate, the University of Winnipeg Collegiate and Hapnot Collegiate of Flin Flon. Neelin is the second seed. The Spartans are with Sanford, Calvin Christian, College Beliveau and Landmark. The U of W is the top seed. Virden boys are seeded ninth and in a pool with Gabrielle Roy of Ile des Chenes, Springs Christian, Neelin and the top seed Sanford Sabres. The Spartans are the fifth seed.
