Federal Public Safety Minister Vic Toews believes now is not the time to force Canadians to return to the polls. He says international officials are commending Canada on the direction it's moving, and an election right now would only create uncertainty, hurting a very fragile economy.

Toews says most Canadians are telling them they don't want an election, but he says unfortunately not all politicians agree. He believes there are some Conservatives who feel now would be an opportune time to have an election and obtain a majority government. But Toews thinks it's a better idea to try and work with the opposition parties as much as possible to prevent an election and strengthen the economy. Having said that, Toews says his party must be prepared for an election. He notes as part of a minority government the last five years, a potential election is always in the back of his mind.

Toews says the next logical time for the opposition to force an election, would be after the Conservatives deliver the budget, a date that has not yet been set. But he notes right now there doesn't seem to be any reason to bring down the government and Toews says for the mostpart Canadians appear satisfied with the Conservatives and the initiatives they're bringing forward. And he adds his government continues to work with opposition members to try and pass legislation and get the budget passed.
