"Listen up Stevie. Listen up. A message has been sent to you."

That response coming from Liberal Agriculture Critic Wayne Easter when asked to comment on the results in the Canadian Wheat Board director election.

"Jeepers, did farmers ever send the Prime Minister a message. Four out of five of the directors are pro-single desk at a time when Mr. Harper has had a gag order for three or four years now," says Easter. "That makes two elections in a row where four out of five now have went through the electoral process and are very, very clearly single desk supporters."

"This is the democratic process at work," says Liberal Deputy Leader Ralph Goodale. "The point is all the power and authority of the Canadian Wheat Board is invested in the hands of its directors. Two-thirds of them are duly elected by farmers themselves. We just need to be very vigilant to make sure that democratic producer control continues to thrive. Farmers need to run the show."

Meanwhile, not all the stakeholders involved in growing wheat and barley are pleased with the election results. Read the Western Canadian Wheat Growers' response to the CWB election results.
