PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Just a reminder that RCMP DO NOT do child abuse and adult abuse registry checks.  RCMP is responsible for criminal record checks and vulnerable sector checks.  You require a vulnerable sector check if you are in a position of trust. You must present to the detachment when applying for a vulnerable sector check.

Position of Trust means a paid or voluntary position dealing with vulnerable people. Vulnerable people may include children, youth, the elderly, people with physical, developmental, emotional, social, or other disabilities, people who are addicted or dependent on addictive substances, and people who have been the victim of a crime or an accident.

Applicants who require a Vulnerable Sector Check from their organization must present themselves in person and provide written consent in order for the checks to be conducted.

Proper identification must be produced and recorded on the application: a government issued photo identification for the Primary Document, and a secondary document which verifies the Primary identification.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SCAMS IN THE AREA.

Police are warning residents of a "grandparent" phone scam. The scammers call claiming to be a relative (usually a grandchild or son) and stating that they have been involved in an accident with a pregnant woman. They then convince the victims to pay large sums of money in order to have the relative released from jail or to cover the damages from the accident. The scammers then send someone to the home to collect the money. Police say the same type of scam happened in January but the scammers are back in Brandon again. This scam may be coming to this area. Call police or 911 immediately if you get this kind of phone call or someone shows up at your residence to collect money.

The Turtle Mountain RCMP would also like to remind everyone that frauds appear to be on the rise in this area again. If something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. If you experience a strange e-mail/text/phone call giving a sad or distressful story, followed by a request for money, DO NOT SEND IT. Call the police and ask them for advice. The Turtle Mountain RCMP and all other Manitoba RCMP detachments learn of these scams and can provide you with professional advice so you don't have to work 10 years past retirement to get back your loss. We would much rather have a brief 2 minute phone call with you than invest countless hours and resources through investigation in order to get you compensation. Another red flag, always be suspicious if someone is asking you to buy gift cards and send those or scratch them off and send the number.
